<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I have been eager to use one of the IOD Transfers I purchased about 6 months ago and have been looking for the perfect piece of furniture, I finally found this cute armoire in one of my local charity shops. When I first saw it I was in a rush but managed to get back to the shop a couple of days later - hoping it would still be there, I was delighted, not only was it still there, but it had been reduced by £15! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVSJUy_JqdNcRVcMmTwqI0YVDHdCq4d2oS1RcStmOaabSFnDvXwFui6d3chXG3yZnl4v1NDrXO23kyP_4UPBe4p2NTY4Jo8piKA7-aTVwxr72Ge6-cXcUBT18y2aP2E06uEPdK7cV3LBsi/s1600/IOD+Armoire+before.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1366" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVSJUy_JqdNcRVcMmTwqI0YVDHdCq4d2oS1RcStmOaabSFnDvXwFui6d3chXG3yZnl4v1NDrXO23kyP_4UPBe4p2NTY4Jo8piKA7-aTVwxr72Ge6-cXcUBT18y2aP2E06uEPdK7cV3LBsi/s640/IOD+Armoire+before.jpg" width="546" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I scrubbed it thoroughly with a scourer and sugar soap, once it was dry I lightly scuffed the shiny surface with medium grit sand paper. I decided on Fusion Mineral Paint - Cathedral Taupe, a lovely neutral beigey taupe colour. I used a wax block around the edges and then gave it two coats of paint which covered the dark wood perfectly. Once the 2nd coat was dry I used a fine sanding sponge to rub back the paint on the edges, where I had used the wax block the paint easily rubbed away to reveal the wood underneath giving a nice distressed appearance. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I waited a couple of days before adding my IOD Transfer. I made sure I measured and marked the centre as I didn't want it to look lopsided. It only took about 15 minutes to gently rub over the whole transfer with the little wooden spatula supplied with the transfer. I was pleased how easy it was, being the first time I have ever used any kind of 'rub-on' transfer.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Once it was in place I gently rubbed in some Fusion Beeswax and Hemp Oil Wax to seal my transfer.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWl7uCmBBC0HQoH64tMWXSvQZkUvO7Pm2qhBXSgUb2GZWUvzpnNVhh4ubXjrpV8xUCcM6MS_7MaVO776skxuLwsO3k7G1lXEWHCKHlS1Jx_rp8TqqvD_h_3JbB_vRWRIbMzgJanAJV7k9k/s1600/IOD+Armoire+4.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1272" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWl7uCmBBC0HQoH64tMWXSvQZkUvO7Pm2qhBXSgUb2GZWUvzpnNVhh4ubXjrpV8xUCcM6MS_7MaVO776skxuLwsO3k7G1lXEWHCKHlS1Jx_rp8TqqvD_h_3JbB_vRWRIbMzgJanAJV7k9k/s640/IOD+Armoire+4.png" width="508" /></a></div>
I am delighted with the result and can't wait to find some more projects to try some different designs.<br />

This little Armoire will make a perfect addition to so many rooms, with 2 shelves inside there is plenty of storage and the door locks beautifully with the original key. <br />

I fell in love with this unit, I just loved all the little extra touches - the shelf underneath and the cute little shelf on the top. With all these details it could have so many uses. I staged it for a bathroom, but you could actually use it in so many places in your home - in fact I think it would fit perfectly in ANY room!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It started out a rather ugly orangey stain, although it had been pre-finished so I didn't think I would run into problems with the stain bleeding through. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I decided to paint her with Fusion Mineral Paint in the colour Inglenook, which is a lovely soft blue/grey with a hint of green. I literally just gave it 2 coats for a perfect finish. <br />
I did change the drawers pulls, as I wanted to bring it up-to-date so I added some antique brass cup handles.<br />

I've had this rustic wooden box a little while now - every time I went in the garage (where I keep my 'stash') I would look at it and say to myself 'I really must get that out and give it a make over' it didn't need a lot to turn it from a rough old box to a beautiful rustic storage box.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSupj_hArkzGniZb9eHAuW9bBxF-bQVGLADASw37cswhfcjQxBI-fRMl73GaF1fvmEM2fuYqOwvd_sdOTuiANTgHQRM6Ef7slQ-BldPJQxy16UO6AtW6IsON8asqe-W72RsKpeipti7Gc/s1600/rustic+stencilled+box.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSupj_hArkzGniZb9eHAuW9bBxF-bQVGLADASw37cswhfcjQxBI-fRMl73GaF1fvmEM2fuYqOwvd_sdOTuiANTgHQRM6Ef7slQ-BldPJQxy16UO6AtW6IsON8asqe-W72RsKpeipti7Gc/s640/rustic+stencilled+box.png" width="480" /></a></div>
And... I was right - out came the vacuum cleaner, then a good rub down with some fine wire wool and white spirit.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsiq1gfk1hnBhdK1T_K4mW-2e6QHAzogXjtI7y2rVWKYG71x3v0ZUp43g5YDAT10lPKLVfSbx8rwDzQN_emWQ_MHdsXsGyr89gNzPwztN5fYfUJKxTWiLlzE-3fj9AeNzMAofIfCKntFA/s1600/before+box.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsiq1gfk1hnBhdK1T_K4mW-2e6QHAzogXjtI7y2rVWKYG71x3v0ZUp43g5YDAT10lPKLVfSbx8rwDzQN_emWQ_MHdsXsGyr89gNzPwztN5fYfUJKxTWiLlzE-3fj9AeNzMAofIfCKntFA/s640/before+box.png" width="480" /></a></div>
Once the white spirit was dry, I gave it a couple of coats of Miss Mustard Seed Antiquing Wax, then I dug out this great stencil which I have been wanting to try out for some time. I actually stencilled using black wax rather than a paint or dye, which worked well.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I just thought it was the perfect look for this box.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have to admit if the box was slightly smaller I would have kept it, as I have a space I need to fill with a wooden storage box, and this would have been perfect, but alas it just didn't fit.</div>

I did actually sell this box in 'superquick' time though to a lovely lady who was thrilled with it.</div>

I got this cabinet from an antiques fair, it was sturdy and had "good bones" although there were a few little issues which I thought would fix easily, the main problem was the missing trim...but it soon became a major overhaul!</div>

There was sticky vinyl paper stuck on the shelves which peeled off very easily, however it left a sticky residue which turned into a royal pain in the rear. You can not paint over the stickiness as the paint won't adhere. I used a product called "HG Sticker Remover" it is a chemical based product, which I don't like to use but I had no option. It dissolved the stickiness to an even stickier mess and I ended up scrubbing the shelves with fairy liquid and a kitchen scourer under the hot tap, thank goodness the shelves were removable! In future I will definitely avoid ANYTHING with sticky vinyl paper - be warned my friends you don't want to go there! </div>

For the missing trim issue I decided to try making a mould and cast a replacement using 'Fimo' Although it wasn't perfect it was perfectly fine once painted and I would definitely do this again. The pictures below show the 2 spots where the trim was missing.</div>

Here's what I used and what the cast looked like, I made up the actual replacement trim in brown Fimo, and just stuck it in place with wood glue. Looks a bit messy but once painted...<br />

Issue No. 3 was the top, it was not sitting tightly on the base. It had just been nailed on, so in my wisdom I thought it would be a 5 minute job to whip it off and re-nail it back on! Not this time - there were hidden nails, bent nails and nails that went nowhere??? So it was out with my trusty drill and screws, which meant a lot more filling and sanding on the top, but at least I have a nice neatly fitting super strong top now.</div>

Quite a transformation from the above picture, all thanks to Fusion Mineral Paint! I used Ash on the outside a dark charcoal grey and to contrast I chose Cathedral Taupe, which is a greyish beige, I think they pair together really well, what do you think?</div>

Inglenook was one of the first colours I tried in the Fusion Mineral Paint range <a href="http://oliveandmaud.blogspot.co.uk/2015/02/1st-fusion-mineral-paint-project.html" target="_blank">(Coal Black being the first - you can see my first Fusion Project here.)</a> Every time I have used <em>Inglenook</em> since, each piece has sold very quickly and this pretty little bedside was no exception.<br />

On our last trip to France I had a Bedside Table frenzy! and ended up with 7! so you may see a few more over the coming weeks! I think this one was my favourite of the 7 as it was so dainty - in perfect condition and a perfect size for someone with a small space to fill.<br />

I wiped her down with sugar soap to remove any grease and dust, very lightly rubbed over with medium grit sandpaper, and after 2 coats of Fusion Mineral Paint <em>Inglenook </em>she was transformed.<br />

I picked this bedside table up on my last trip to France - It's got a little bit of a quirky leg - all the legs are firm and the whole table is sturdy but the front left leg sits at a slight angle - looks likes she's about to do a curtsy!!<br />
I wanted to try out a new Fusion Mineral Paint colour - Litchen which I have bought to paint a chest of drawers in my guest bedroom. If you have followed my blog for a while you'll know I love green, I wanted a lovely soft muted green and Litchen is exactly the colour I was after, I will share the chest of drawers once that is finished.<br />
<br />
Here's the before pic, which I nearly missed as I had already started painting the drawer - nothing new for me - I'm always so eager to get cracking with the prepping and painting!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx3pBD14EZFarpwSuGHGcG1DimD1H46AIlY5MtRqi5q3eQ1uB9gySCiZFuzqGPoF6wi1bPjbzGinQPifq2nOSV-YePB71Sp0CYQASE4M47ASkOL8sKAJyXS83OG9nr40-1sa8_objh45Q/s1600/French+bedside+052017.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx3pBD14EZFarpwSuGHGcG1DimD1H46AIlY5MtRqi5q3eQ1uB9gySCiZFuzqGPoF6wi1bPjbzGinQPifq2nOSV-YePB71Sp0CYQASE4M47ASkOL8sKAJyXS83OG9nr40-1sa8_objh45Q/s640/French+bedside+052017.png" width="502" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't distress this piece straight away after painting - I got a bit distracted so when I finally got around to working on her again a few days later, I was concerned it was not going to work out how I wanted, but I was pleased this was not the case, and I managed to get some nicely distressed edges using some medium grit sandpaper.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm looking forward to using this colour again in my guest room - I have some fabric lined up for cushions which picks out the lovely sagey green of the Litchen - Fusion Mineral Paint.</div>

<br />
After about 2 years collecting dust in the garage I finally got around to painting this chiffonier, I don't know why it took me so long to get cracking with it as it is an absolutely lovely piece of furniture, the detail is very appealing with the lovely barley twist side bars and the stunning ornate carving on the top.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Once I got it into my workshop, cleaned it up and prepped it, I knew straight away I wanted to use a very dark grey/charcoal colour. Having previously used Fusion Mineral Paint "Coal Black" I thought I would try "Ash" - this is more charcoal and not absolutely pitch black, to offset the dark exterior I painted the inside with Cathedral Taupe, which was a great combination.<br />
<br />
The secret drawer had a lovely wooden edge with a really gorgeous patina so I chose not to paint it, which worked really well.<br />

Amazingly this piece sold within 20 mins! - Definitely one of my favourite projects to date.<br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For some time now I have been working on my "Re-Brand" -There are a few personal reasons for the change, but I mainly wanted to have a name which had a personal connection and meaning and at the same time be relevant to what I do - so Juniper & Roses has evolved into OLIVE & MAUD! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Olive was my Nan and Maud was her best friend and my God-Mother. Maud lived with my Grandparents when I was a little girl and together Olive & Maud were a very happy and funny pair of friends, I have very fond memories of them both.<br />
I hope you will wish me well as I build my brand as OLIVE & MAUD and continue with my furniture painting and love of vintage home styling.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I spotted this beauty on our local facebook selling pages - I could instantly see the potential, although it was being used in a bedroom, I just thought it was so versatile - would be great in a dining room a hallway or in a large bathroom</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It originally came from the USA and the maker was Ethan Allen - which is a very 'high end' furniture store! This was evident as it was so well made, the wood is beautiful and little additional details like hidden castors under the feet to make it easy to move around.</div>

I removed the sections from the top shelf as I thought this made it more usable for it's 'new life' I decided to use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and painted the whole thing with Paris Grey and picked out the inside of the cupboard with Old White to give it some contrast. The whole thing is finished with Polyvine Decorators Varnish.<br />

This project was a lot more labour intensive than I thought it would be and I have to say I was very pleased to finish it. It is now for sale at Lovingly Made in Copthorne, RH19 2QQ.<br />

I was given this chest of drawers a few weeks ago, it was in need of some TLC, new handles and some colour! Its a great solid piece of furniture, it has a beautiful curved front which I love, but I needed to choose new handles carefully because of the curve.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVECYc2N179dSzBO8izZEYy6xAogCBBYe8VebU4vGLv31l1RlOrjQRIExmgUT5Iai56qJIJEwwtcHqIXEUny3o3MPAhMGYUeJuM0WdTpOWg-yEji_2gC5ku3Rgagn2AlWaOoAbdaaN6n8/s1600/20160727_102954.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVECYc2N179dSzBO8izZEYy6xAogCBBYe8VebU4vGLv31l1RlOrjQRIExmgUT5Iai56qJIJEwwtcHqIXEUny3o3MPAhMGYUeJuM0WdTpOWg-yEji_2gC5ku3Rgagn2AlWaOoAbdaaN6n8/s640/20160727_102954.jpg" width="446" /></a></div>
I decided to go with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint - Provence and plenty of dark wax, I also did some arty farty paint splashes to give it an aged worn feel.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I really love these handles, they are new but look like old ones, they are antique bass which just picks out the brass on the key holes on each drawer, I'm a sucker for detail so they are perfect for me.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiI1YBJvec2C1FSiquSWLY-x5YkBfKMeDcaXQljrckzaScpBOGUfzpqLsI2rFj0_5s4lP1CNyqYt8FCa4ZwCwd_l-udY_RTq48sMAhGHhrZIK2L-vCU5qcPXYM0IlMj5Zg1TP6RUbZpVJo/s1600/AS+Provence.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiI1YBJvec2C1FSiquSWLY-x5YkBfKMeDcaXQljrckzaScpBOGUfzpqLsI2rFj0_5s4lP1CNyqYt8FCa4ZwCwd_l-udY_RTq48sMAhGHhrZIK2L-vCU5qcPXYM0IlMj5Zg1TP6RUbZpVJo/s640/AS+Provence.jpg" width="360" /></a></div>
I don't often say this - but the finished piece looks better in real life than it does in the photos, it's probably because my photography is not up to scratch, but all in all this could not have turned out better, I'm very pleased with the finished result.<br />
You may well see this colour again very soon.<br />
Bye for now<br />

I love bureaus - but I always think of them as quite masculine pieces of furniture, and when contemplating what colour to paint this piece - there was really no choice to make - it had to be Black! - I used Miss Mustard seeds Milk Paint in shade - Typewriter.<br />

I gave it a quick rubdown by hand with a medium grade sandpaper, I removed the original handles, and replaced them to update it a little, but I decided to keep the original patina on the little cubbie holes.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This was a great piece to paint - a good solid piece of furniture which just needed cleaning and lightly sanding before painting with Autentico - French Grey - I changed the hardware to compliment the style and after a little bit of distressing an dry brushing the transformation was a great improvement.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Its been over a year since I last shared a project on my blog. Lots has happened - some good some not so good, but I am happy I have dusted off my paint brushes and finally got around to painting and posting.<br />
My before picture is not good so apologies for that, but after a couple of coats of Autentico - 'Gris', contrasting deeper grey inside the top part of the cabinet and some different knobs, this was the perfect piece to get me 'back in the saddle' (I'm also lovin' the castors - which were all in perfect condition,)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Staging and styling my finished pieces always gives me a great deal of pleasure and as I haven't done it for long time I was racing around the house looking for interesting pieces which would look right, it didn't take long before I had gathered up some items which were relevant to the pieces and the right colour.<br />

This little coffee table was a chunky waxed pine, a little on the golden yellow shading - I knocked it about a bit to give it a rustic feel, then stained the top in dark oak and painted the bottom in Autentico 'Pebbles'<br />

For some time now I have been wanting to try out the new paint line from Homestead House Paint Company - the company that manufacture Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint, unfortunately it's not available to buy in the UK so I ordered a selection of colours from Goedele Francois at <a href="http://oldredbarn.be/en/32-fusion-mineral-paint" target="_blank">Old Red Barn</a> in Belgium.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The packaging and branding looks really classy, and the paint is fabulous - feels like thick smooth cream - it dries very quickly although it is recommended that you leave 12 hours before applying further coats. The paint is acrylic based, is very low in VOC's as it contains a lot of natural ingredients. Very little prep work is required although for shiny or pre finished surfaces it is advisable to lightly sand your surface before painting. You don't need to add a top coat unless you want a particular finish as it is all incorporated in the paint, the finish is beautifully matt - not at all chalky. These are the colours in the line.</div>

As the top has some holes where it would originally have had a mirror or some sort of shelf attached, I thought the best course of action would be to paint it - this way I could fill the holes and paint over them so no-one would ever know they had ever been there!<br />

I used some dowels to plug up the holes, sticking them in with glue, I made sure they were a nice snug fit in the holes, I then used wood filler to cover over the gaps.<br />

The front of the drawers had a lovely walnut veneer finish - the lacquer was peeling and looked dull, so I very carefully and lightly sanded the drawer fronts - removing all the lacquer, I then masked off the walnut veneered fronts, just leaving the edges clear for painting. - I knew straight away that Coal Black was going to give this piece a dramatic and sophisticated look so I painted everything except the walnut veneer - once I removed the masking tape I massaged some Hemp Oil into the drawer fronts where I had sanded, this rejuvenated the look of the veneer giving it an amazing patina and a fabulous contrast with the Coal Black Fusion Mineral Paint. <br />

The paint covered over the filled holes on the top beautifully. I gave the piece just 2 coats of paint then lightly distressed all the edges with fine sandpaper then finished with some hemp oil over the paint as well as the drawer fronts.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It's been a while since my last blog post - there has been lots going on, but I realised how much I had missed posting my projects. So I have cleared the decks a little - well just enough to enable me to get some painting done and to be able to photograph as I go.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhvA3drv1KYrio-RD57SOT-eBhupE7HUQmtjfOkpAwZDGPf4eCH3qxGlD4DhJMkFiSI45XQ0v7_2QY34BMgbaCzXqSG1GIZrrsTAfZiGQJQerKjoyY2Klnfq25kqvQlcqsicMVo7vxJ7w/s1600/Chair+Jan+15.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhvA3drv1KYrio-RD57SOT-eBhupE7HUQmtjfOkpAwZDGPf4eCH3qxGlD4DhJMkFiSI45XQ0v7_2QY34BMgbaCzXqSG1GIZrrsTAfZiGQJQerKjoyY2Klnfq25kqvQlcqsicMVo7vxJ7w/s1600/Chair+Jan+15.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<span style="text-align: justify;">I'm starting off the year with this chair - it's been hanging around for at least 2 years! I picked it up at a car boot sale for £3 - The fabric on the seat pad was pretty awful but I did get around to taking it off straight away and that's as far as I got with it. The rest of the chair was in good condition, although some of he surface lacquer was a little cracked and peeling, I like it when the surface is like this as the milk paint enhances the imperfections giving it an interesting patina.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6h7Y0h_2REmHFZgqLaar1DpUCdvTIg8jsNkiXsXj3PcGxIfNQtUVT89vVrD4mLmOUq60XN_8NZgCAn0PhKbCMdwKav0ozne5g3BWsNcKtFnoAk5bH7_tk6yDLJo8Xs6dM_0l420kKfGg/s1600/Chair+Jan+15+patina.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6h7Y0h_2REmHFZgqLaar1DpUCdvTIg8jsNkiXsXj3PcGxIfNQtUVT89vVrD4mLmOUq60XN_8NZgCAn0PhKbCMdwKav0ozne5g3BWsNcKtFnoAk5bH7_tk6yDLJo8Xs6dM_0l420kKfGg/s1600/Chair+Jan+15+patina.jpg" height="640" width="416" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: justify;"> I had an off cut/sample I was given of some beautiful Toile de Jouy in pale green and reddish/pink, so I decided to custom mix my Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint to create a a slightly lighter, toning pale green. Lucketts Green on it's own was a little too bluey - so after some experimenting I ended up with the following mix:</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
2 parts Linen, a half part Lucketts Green and a half part Mustard Seed Yellow - it's a rather lovely Pistachio colour, and is slightly paler than the background colour of the fabric.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0itvH33vxfRPdZox0Cr5RpRUVs1sVDDoQ-eYDfpCxLJQe9I_K9zWDaDHd8CglK1zZzixvrkkBokXbylHbo_HZmeJ6plHassamzxoKvvZ0Op4o4yrEDSbjWKxLvpNc-MCd2oFLs2Xtktw/s1600/Chair+Jan+15+Toile+de+Jouy+fabric+pad.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0itvH33vxfRPdZox0Cr5RpRUVs1sVDDoQ-eYDfpCxLJQe9I_K9zWDaDHd8CglK1zZzixvrkkBokXbylHbo_HZmeJ6plHassamzxoKvvZ0Op4o4yrEDSbjWKxLvpNc-MCd2oFLs2Xtktw/s1600/Chair+Jan+15+Toile+de+Jouy+fabric+pad.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I actually took these photos with my mobile phone and the colour has reproduced pretty much exactly how it looks, it's a very pretty colour. This project was just 2 quick coats of the custom mixed Milk Paint, a very light sanding when the paint was dry just giving a nice amount of distressing on the edges, a quick lick of hemp oil, covering the seat pad took longer than painting the chair!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeRALXkbSO9t2vZmXxF0Xgrd6UNWJd7zYvKqIn_fMfN2JizsYaPFZ6bGgwF8aSA-E83ZtfLepX0lJuatI06eN3j7o3fn5csqdxgrsr3ZHc8kldDhMMs6iLfrVtJc2VoOvDUj5sn-fCKb4/s1600/Chair+Jan+15+side.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjeRALXkbSO9t2vZmXxF0Xgrd6UNWJd7zYvKqIn_fMfN2JizsYaPFZ6bGgwF8aSA-E83ZtfLepX0lJuatI06eN3j7o3fn5csqdxgrsr3ZHc8kldDhMMs6iLfrVtJc2VoOvDUj5sn-fCKb4/s1600/Chair+Jan+15+side.jpg" height="640" width="448" /></a></div>
All in all a great little project to get me back into the groove!<br />

I love it when I find a great piece of furniture - one that is:<br />
A. Old <b><i>and </i></b>in great condition<br />
B. Has all the original hardware<br />
&<br />
C. Has a great shape or design that makes it stand out.<br />
This piece had all of the above criteria, it's defining features for me are the original hardware and those cute 'heart cut outs' on the mirror supports.<br />

The mirror is beveled and has a few age marks (which I love) with this in mind I decided this piece was going to get a Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint make-over with no bonding agent I wanted it to chip away to it's hearts content - First of all I gave it a good wipe down with sugar soap - I use this in a spray version - it's easy to use - just spray on wipe wipe with a sponge - I lot of grime came off .<br />

I used the colour 'Grainsack', just 2 coats gave me the exact look I was after and it 'chipped' like a 'good'un' Once the paint was dry I gently sanded with a fine sanding sponge, and then finished with a coat of Polyvine Dead Flat decorators varnish.</div>

I'm really pleased with this piece - the finish is really smooth, I was very tempted to keep it, but I really don't have the room for it, so I whisked her off to <a href="http://www.lovinglymadeltd.co.uk/" target="_blank">Lovingly Made</a>, where she is for sale in their Vintage Shop.</div>

I styled the photo's with my bunch of 'Special Lavender' - I bought this bunch 2 years ago, at <a href="http://www.mayfieldlavender.com/" target="_blank">Mayfield Lavender Farm in Surrey </a>- when my daughter Laura told me she was expecting a baby and I was going to become a grandmother! I now have the most beautiful Grandaughter - Lilah Jayne and very fond memories of that special sunny day, surrounded by Lavender having just been given the most wonderful news, a truly wonderful moment!</div>

I was given this old chest of drawers - which was in desperate need of some TLC - it had several layers of old oil based paint - a lot of dirt & grime and very stiff drawers - I could barely pull them in or out!<br />

That being said it was a good shape and the wood was solid with no splits or gouges plus I do like a challenge!. I sanded the top and drawer fronts, the rest I cleaned thoroughly with sugar soap and A LOT of elbow grease.<br />
For the drawer fronts I custom mixed 3 parts Grainsack 1 part Eulalies Sky and a little Trophy to give it a little more 'muted' tone, the base sides and top were just straight Grainsack - I love the way I got some natural crackle on the top - just gives it that 'old, used look'. After finishing the entire piece with MMS Hemp Oil, I added a little MMS Antiquing Wax in strategic places to give a little more aged effect.<br />

I recycle the handles from an old piece of furniture I was given - I love this style of handle - not very pretty but rustic and vintage - all in all I'm really pleased with the transformation - and as if by magic the drawers seem to work fine now - I think she was just after some attention!<br />

This coffee table is HUGE! it's 3ft square and really heavy the wood on the top is nearly 2 inches thick!<br />
I had to sand down the top which was no problem and didn't take long at all - but there were marks and a lot of wax on there, which soon disappeared once I got cracking with the sander!<br />

I removed the top from the base as I find this much easier for painting and for Laura to work on the graphics. - a good tip is to always number parts when you take out screws - I use chalk to mark the numbers - it's easy to see and can be rubbed off easily when you have finished your piece.<br />

As this table had so much wax on it I decided to use Autentico Chalk Paint again - I had plenty left after my last project <a href="http://juniperandroses.blogspot.co.uk/2014/04/autentico-chalk-paint-to-rescue.html" target="_blank">Autnentico Chalk Paint to the Rescue </a> and I knew it would soak up and cover over the old wax residue.<br />

Laura has done a fabulous job on the graphic - yet again! she is so clever and has such a steady hand - it looks amazing! We used <a href="http://thegraphicsfairy.com/" target="_blank">The Graphics Fairy</a> as usual.<br />
I have projects stacking up now and will post as soon as they are done.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I have had this little coffee table hanging around for ages - I knew it would be a very quick job to turn around once the wobbly leg was fixed - and in fact once I actually got around to it fixing the leg was easy and I managed to do it in-between other jobs one Sunday afternoon a few weeks ago.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIHAL-zLfcmXg3hvifjE8Cek83flicYHbheW7xm2KUsCuT1sWguHH_3SOs7KswLR9__HXQFTAUFKIRc_MGeplzmUxRi_eEc8P6UeZqtrw8RJOMYSlVOVMpgsOguwWAN_e0FDJhl5gllBI/s1600/Kitchen+Scale+before.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIHAL-zLfcmXg3hvifjE8Cek83flicYHbheW7xm2KUsCuT1sWguHH_3SOs7KswLR9__HXQFTAUFKIRc_MGeplzmUxRi_eEc8P6UeZqtrw8RJOMYSlVOVMpgsOguwWAN_e0FDJhl5gllBI/s1600/Kitchen+Scale+before.jpg" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
So with lovely new strong legs - I set to work with my favorite Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint colout - 'Kitchen Scale' it's such a great colour - not too bright and has that lovely vintage muted tone, I would describe the colour as a soft 'Teal' shade.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYxqI_INN2Rw5Gc-fu_IeD7_oZd3AV1Mwuu1TpHS5kw3j8qt-JieZK55EztAcz_L_K5IoZv3OzyESRuG854cT0XyVQc7xPxGCn7Dhiwdld_KGic5I5L6WnsXD9m-eaMuCVvSUyGEhI2mE/s1600/Kitchen+Scale+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYxqI_INN2Rw5Gc-fu_IeD7_oZd3AV1Mwuu1TpHS5kw3j8qt-JieZK55EztAcz_L_K5IoZv3OzyESRuG854cT0XyVQc7xPxGCn7Dhiwdld_KGic5I5L6WnsXD9m-eaMuCVvSUyGEhI2mE/s1600/Kitchen+Scale+2.jpg" height="456" width="640" /></a></div>
Kitchen Scale really looks great against dark wood when it has that great 'chippy' affect - it really does look like its been around for years and has chipped and faded over time.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqwYHnL5WlDGQazpC8AvVh_A_d-WszcJkFRklbh2zHJzfGIrfGIcQ5tLI231k7ZvpmddnmYaProMkYcBBKmZmRyiAuWG5yIsQz-En1YrTQoYVEnEr2Yrhe6Aqce54cwh03llvLmEg-RcI/s1600/Kitchen+Scale+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqwYHnL5WlDGQazpC8AvVh_A_d-WszcJkFRklbh2zHJzfGIrfGIcQ5tLI231k7ZvpmddnmYaProMkYcBBKmZmRyiAuWG5yIsQz-En1YrTQoYVEnEr2Yrhe6Aqce54cwh03llvLmEg-RcI/s1600/Kitchen+Scale+3.jpg" height="640" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
When painting anything with legs - tables or chairs - I always turn them upside down for the first coat - by doing this - once you turn it back upright you can easily see if you have missed any bits - and cover those with your next coat.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy3pFxTOO6jQneHl5ZQDXRhfVnPJR87SiVzG-LllLDckuPBByr7c_bwTHnVIkm-lXQbZHSwuvOistNvat8xXb7qgzgXalgPiLi63xcNcEOQl3cZMPzNJAHBtzyqXTpZgla0ufUrTHK6p8/s1600/Kitchen+Scale+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy3pFxTOO6jQneHl5ZQDXRhfVnPJR87SiVzG-LllLDckuPBByr7c_bwTHnVIkm-lXQbZHSwuvOistNvat8xXb7qgzgXalgPiLi63xcNcEOQl3cZMPzNJAHBtzyqXTpZgla0ufUrTHK6p8/s1600/Kitchen+Scale+6.jpg" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I have found these amazing sanding pads on eBay - they are 'super' fine, and great for rounded surfaces like legs - so much better than a stiff sheet of sand paper as they gently fold around the surface giving a really even finish - using them leaves the paint so smooth. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig_UByy25SSDFvHmIXkdXFhtrpMT1Yja-edfKo6aqJSkOCM2WehHlm5Yu7RGys5wBL-BfnpEdCLnOaX-lYhuYqSYTtMIPDjOsFnco5RiwmMe7i5t2Q6OadiRX9hDBcgEu3tEXSnwM_Czw/s1600/Kitchen+Scale+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEig_UByy25SSDFvHmIXkdXFhtrpMT1Yja-edfKo6aqJSkOCM2WehHlm5Yu7RGys5wBL-BfnpEdCLnOaX-lYhuYqSYTtMIPDjOsFnco5RiwmMe7i5t2Q6OadiRX9hDBcgEu3tEXSnwM_Czw/s1600/Kitchen+Scale+5.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
and for my next little tip!... - I then dust off the sanded paint dust using these 'micro fibre' cloths - they are 'cheap as chips' and really clean away all the dust so quickly - leaving it beautifully clear ready for the Hemp Oil! </div>

I have just found out that I have been shortlisted for the BiB awards - Brilliance in Blogging, in the 'Style' category! I am gobsmacked, shocked and honored to say the least!<br />
I have been writing my blog for 3 years now and sharing my vintage inspired furniture make overs and up cycling projects has been, and still is something I really love. I hope I have inspired my readers to 'have a go' themselves - it is so rewarding to see something evolve from an ugly drab piece of furniture into a piece of furniture you love, and to give it a new lease of life, and I hope my detailed descriptions and photos of before, during and after show what can be achieved with a little imagination, elbow grease & paint!<br />
If you would like to vote for me please follow the link <a href="https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BiBs2014Shortlist" target="_blank">here </a>- Juniper & Roses is shortlisted in the 'Style' category which is No.12 - only one vote each!<br />
Thank you so much to everyone who has already voted, I really appreciate your support.<br />

For the last 2 years the only paint I have used for my furniture re-cycling projects has been Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint - which I absolutely adore - I love the versatility of milk paint, and although I have had the odd issue, all the results have always turned out well in the end. However this 'baby' caused me some problems - I used filler where the veneer was missing and that worked fine with the Milk Paint, but the overall finish on the veneer was so rough despite sanding and using hemp oil I just wasn't getting the finish I wanted. </div>

<span style="text-align: start;">There was no other option than to go for a lovely thick chalk paint to cover the bad finish on this chest of drawers, so I went to see my friend Elaine at </span><a href="http://www.mylittlevintageattic.com/" style="text-align: start;" target="_blank">Vintage Attic Living</a><span style="text-align: start;"> in Sevenoaks (I must do a post about her gorgeous shop sometime!) she is a new Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint Retailer, and also stocks Autentico Chalk Paint, I have only ever used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint and I wanted to try the Autentico so I could compare the 2 chalk paints - Conclusion: I prefer Autentico! It was fun to use chalk paint again and although I did need 3 coats in the end to get the finish I wanted, I didn't find it so 'gloopy' as ASCP. The shade I chose was 'Stone' which is a lovely beigey/grey. after a gentle sand with fine sand paper, I finished it with hemp oil, which gave it a lovely satin finish, and is so much easier to use than furniture wax!</span></div>

Whilst visiting Vintage Attic Living, I bought some lovely napkins to make some decoupaged knobs for this chest of drawers, it's years since I tried decoupage and I was pleased with the results, I turned these ordinary pine knobs into something interesting and a little 'different' First of all I painted them with Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint in the shade 'Linen' as I wanted to match the background coulour of the paper napkin and it also made a great contrast with the main colour of the chest of drawers. I then used Modge Podge to stick the cut out sections of the napkin to the top of the knobs, and finished the whole knob with a couple of coats of Polyvine Decorators Varnish with a 'Dead Flat' finish.</div>

Going back to using Chalk Paint has not affected my love of Milk Paint, it's just made me realise I have many options and each re-cycling project is totally different, assessing the existing finish that you are about to paint over before starting is very important. This will definitely NOT be a one off, I will be using Atentico Chalk Paint again!</div>

I picked up these bamboo chairs a couple of weeks ago - and thought to myself 'a nice quick makeover job' - plus I haven't done any upholstery for a few years now and have quite a few projects waiting to be upholstered and it will get me back into 'the groove'!<br />

I used Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint - Shutter Gray with bonding agent - and I think I did 4 coats in the end - to be honest I lost count and it was difficult to see where I was in the process on each coat - I tried to be methodical but there were just too many pieces which looked the same, and slanted in the same direction! I finished with 2 coats of Polyvine Decorators Varnish - with a 'dead flat' finish - this will give the paint plenty of protection especially if they are going to be used in a conservatory where temperatures get pretty hot. The dead flat finish gives no sheen at all and so retains the integrity of the paint finish - I use this product a lot - its great for protecting from water splashes as well.<br />

In my rush to get back into upholstery I clean forgot to take any photos of the process! - I took off the old fabric and the foam underneath was turning to powder so I replaced the foam as well. I covered both chairs in a piece of Vintage French Linen - and I was so lucky I just managed to eek it out to cover both chairs. I use a Stanley electric staple gun - which is great for this kind of project.<br />

My experience with Milk Paint just seems to get better and better! I was given this table, from a colleague of my husband Mike - it was going to be taken to the dump! I love the big chunky barley twist legs. This is a really solid well made piece of furniture, and I couldn't wait to get started on her.</div>

The top was quite worn and the original lacquer needed to be sanded off - the wood - solid oak, was in good condition so I knew it would be fine to sand there was no sign of veneer of any sort.<br />

I always sand - 3 times - going up from course to medium and then fine to finish off and get a really lovely smooth finish. It sanded beautifully, as the wood was so good, I tried applying hemp oil on a small inconspicuous spot to see what the colour would look like if I applied the Hemp Oil straight onto the sanded oak. It was a little on the orangey/yellow shade which I don't like, so I decided to use the Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint shade called Curio - which makes a fabulous walnut shade.<br />

I gave the base 3 coats of MMSMP - Grainsack - which is one of the white shades - it's a lovely soft greyish white - I added bonding agent to the first coat, although I would have been very happy to have some chipping, as the table is quite old - approximately 1930's and has had a lot of use sometimes, especially on a dining table there could be grease, which will resist the paint and I wanted to have more control of whether I had a 'chippy' look or not.<br />

The table has 2 extending leaves which tuck underneath the main top - when fully extended using both leaves the table is 185cms long! It's gorgeous! <br />

To finish and seal the paint I used Hemp Oil, and the finish is really smooth, and the colours of the stained top and greyish white base compliment each other perfectly.<br />

This label shows the table was bought in Arding & Hobbs which was a well know reputable chain of Furniture Stores across London established in 1862, I do love a piece with some history!<br />

Now that I have used the Curio Milk Paint as a stain with such tremendous results I will certainly be using it as my first choice for a stain for some other projects which I have lined up!<br />
